This educator practice resource by Development and Research in Early Mathematics Education (DREAM) walks teacher educators through one example of how video analysis can be used to engage preservice teachers in understanding core concepts. In this example, preservice teachers were asked to analyze a video of a young child’s counting skills and knowledge to develop an interpretation of the child’s current knowledge regarding counting and how this interpretation can inform their teaching. While the highlighted example in the resource is based on working with preservice teachers, an explanation of how to implement video analysis practices in any classroom is embedded, as well as elements to consider when selecting videos to use. In addition to teacher educators, this resource may be helpful to secondary educators looking to engage their students in a new way.
