Pronoun Guide for Educators
This educator guide by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) supplies practicing and incoming teachers with a one-page form to collect students’ preferred names and pronouns as well as to address any other concerns students may have. The form can be used as is, be tailored to include desired teacher changes, or be changed to best fit student preferences. For example, the pronoun form can be transferred from a one-page handout to a survey or email response. Similarly, questions such as what holidays students celebrate or their family or guardianship situation can be added. Such a tool can be used to build positive teacher–student relationships, rapport, and solidarity and let students know that they have an ally and trusted adult on campus. Additionally, responses to this form can help guide teachers in scheduling one-on-one check-ins with students and gain a deeper understanding of their identities.
