This research brief from SRI Education emphasizes the potential of openly licensed materials, particularly in three examined open educational resources (OER) programs, to revolutionize teacher practices and enhance culturally responsive teaching. OER refers to materials with an open license that allow teachers and their students to freely use and adapt the materials. These programs purposefully design curricula infused with culturally sustaining practices, promoting a classroom culture of care, equitable standards, inclusive content, and student agency. While these OER programs offer accessible, rigorous, and standards-aligned materials, they also encourage educators to shift toward student-centered teaching practices. However, the report highlights challenges in implementing these practices, with current professional learning opportunities lacking sufficient attention to end users' needs and constraints. The reliance on fee-based professional learning models raises concerns about equitable access, urging OER developers to address financial and structural barriers for widespread impact on teacher efficacy and student-centered teaching practices.
