Teacher Preparation Design Principles Grounded in the Science of Learning and Development

Wednesday, November 2, 2022 | 12:00-1:30 PM EST

This Learning Café introduced design principles grounded in the science of learning and development (SoLD) for teacher preparation built on recent syntheses of research and on the wisdom of practice that is found in many leading-edge programs of preparation, including EdPrepLab members. The design principles are intended to inform ongoing efforts by individual programs to strengthen the ways in which they prepare candidates for teaching. They are also intended to inform the ongoing efforts of accrediting bodies and licensing agencies to frame the expectations for teacher preparation. Further, these principles provide the foundation for a related set of principles for leader preparation so that the efforts of teachers can be supported by principals and other system leaders who understand how to develop organizational settings that enable successful practice. The teacher preparation design principles were developed by an Advisory Committee made up of EdPrepLab member faculty and other leading scholars, practitioners, and policy partners in the field; we are currently undertaking a similar process to develop the leadership preparation design principles. We provided an overview of the design principles for pre-k-12 learning environments on which EdPrepLab’s forthcoming teacher and leader preparation design principles will be based.

Teacher Preparation Design Principles Town Hall

Friday, November 4, 2022 | 3:00-4:30 PM EST

Well-prepared educators, who can create empowering and effective learning environments based on the science of learning and development (SoLD), are critical to creating the conditions students need to learn. This is a members-only Town Hall event at which EdPrepLab’s teacher preparation design principles were shared and discussed. Members had the opportunity to raise questions and provide feedback on these principles.

These Learning Cafés launch EdPrepLab’s learning series based on the science of learning and development (SoLD). Six times throughout this academic year, we will present a Learning Café in two parts. Part I will focus on the theory and research behind the SoLD design principles for pre-k-12 environments, as well as the SoLD design principles for teacher preparation. Part II will focus on the practical application of SoLD research for public schools and teacher preparation programs. We invite discussants with leadership expertise who will draw attention to the implications for leadership preparation at the end of some events
