This research brief from EdResearch for Action examines the key components of teacher education programs that effectively support early-career teachers. Given the high turnover rates among novice educators, the brief synthesizes evidence-based strategies that enhance teacher development and retention. It highlights five essential practices for designing strong induction programs: (1) coaching, (2) targeted professional development, (3) peer collaboration, (4) administrative support, and (5) workload adjustments. Additionally, it cautions against ineffective approaches such as rigid or generic requirements that fail to address new teachers’ immediate needs or professional growth. By outlining actionable strategies and noting pitfalls to avoid, this resource intends to equip teacher and leader preparation faculty with research-backed guidance to design induction programs that better prepare, support, and retain novice educators.
