Social, Emotional, and Academic Development Through an Equity Lens
This tool from The Education Trust highlights the critical role of social, emotional, and academic development in PreK–12 education. It critiques current approaches that focus solely on modifying student behavior—particularly in schools serving students of color and low-income students—without addressing systemic barriers. Instead, it advocates for a holistic approach that considers adult beliefs, school policies, and contextual factors such as racism and socioeconomic status. The report outlines six key recommendations: (1) providing meaningful professional development, (2) engaging families and communities as partners, (3) diversifying the educator workforce, (4) ensuring equitable access to rigorous and culturally sustaining coursework, (5) implementing inclusive discipline and dress code policies, and (6) expanding access to wraparound services. By addressing these factors, schools can foster equitable learning environments in which all students feel valued. This resource is particularly valuable for preparation faculty seeking to equip future educators with strategies to create inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive schools.
