Social and Emotional Learning 101 Podcast

Bloodline Barthelus and Natieka Samuels
January 2024 | National Education Association

This 30-minute podcast from the National Education Association explores what Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is and how it can be enacted to enable better learning and create more welcoming environments for students. Through a conversation between Natieka Samuels and Dr. Bloodline Barthelus, the Director of Practice Innovation at the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), this resource outlines the CASEL SEL Framework, which provides teachers, teacher educators, and administrators with five core competencies that should be addressed. These competencies are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. Recognizing that students practice what their teachers show them, Dr. Barthelus emphasizes that to better support students, teachers must develop and practice these competencies themselves. This resource includes links to several other tools educators can utilize to grow their SEL competencies, including a self-reflection exercise and the CASEL School Guide.
