This brief from the University of Illinois Chicago’s (UIC) Center for Urban Educational Leadership is a follow-up to a 2017 brief and provides details of how UIC improved its principal preparation program selection process. The authors affirm the significance of selecting principal candidates and provide the background of UIC’s selection improvement process in three stages: (1) learning about the importance of dispositions, (2) assessing leader qualities, and (3) ensuring equitable practices. UIC’s effective leadership selection process over the past 13 years is evidenced by a 97% rate of placement in administrative roles for those who successfully complete the preservice program as well as by the diversity of their candidates.
