Respecting Educator-Activists of Color: The Anti-Racist Guide to Teacher Retention

Sharif El-Mekki
October 2024 | Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium

This toolkit from the Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium (PEDC) describes resources and research to assist districts and schools in retaining highly qualified faculties that reflect students’ racial identities, cultural backgrounds, life experiences, and worldviews. The toolkit’s authors aimed to fill a gap in teacher retention materials by creating a guide that was anti-racist and that was intentionally designed to eradicate education inequities and oppression. It includes easy-to-pilot ideas and initiatives created by educators of color, educator-activists, thought leaders, and researchers from the community. The toolkit is well primed to assist states, schools, and teacher preparation communities to become better equipped and knowledgeable to develop retention efforts that are anti-racist and culturally responsive for all educators of color, specifically Black educators.
