Reimagining Partnerships in Higher Education to Advance Innovative Educational Practices
This playbook, produced through Remake Learning, is a resource that presents several models for teacher preparation. It addresses the challenge of preparing qualified teachers during a national teacher shortage and the gap that often exists between teacher preparation in academia and what works in the classroom. This resource highlights three promising, clinically grounded models for closing that gap—professional development schools, laboratory schools, and apprenticeships/residencies—which bring preservice candidates into real school environments earlier and longer in their preparation. It argues that these models share core components: full clinical experience, the mentorship of master teachers, and embedded involvement of higher education faculty working alongside practicing teachers, much like the medical school model. This resource stresses that quality cannot be sacrificed to quantity when addressing shortages. It is designed for district leaders, superintendents, deans, and directors of teacher education programs, offering ways to strengthen and reimagine educator preparation across their region.
