Five Ways AI & UDL Work Better Together

October 2026 | Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST)

This brief from the Center for Applied Special Technology outlines five ways artificial intelligence (AI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can work together to make education more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to learner variability. It addresses a persistent challenge in education technology, which is that tools are often designed around an “average” learner and can create barriers for students whose needs are not considered from the outset. The brief emphasizes co-designing AI tools with learners and applying UDL principles during development rather than adding accessibility features later. It also highlights the central role of educators in designing, selecting, and using AI tools. A CAST survey cited in the brief found that nearly two-thirds of educators reported not receiving the support they need, while 70% wanted to learn more about using AI to support students with disabilities and English learners. This resource can support educators and learning designers in considering how AI and UDL can be used together to reduce barriers and better address learner variability.
