Profiles in Improvement: How Illinois Developed a Data System to Advance Teacher Preparation
This policy brief by New America unpacks the significance and creation of the Illinois Educator Preparation Profile (IEPP) platform. The IEPP tracks the requirements of teacher preparation programs; candidates’ program completion, licensure, and employment outcomes; teacher preparation programs success in supporting student learning and engagement; and how those outcomes intersect with candidate demographics. Access to such data allows for easy assessment of how programs are performing and who is attending them. Making such data publicly accessible holds teacher preparation programs accountable for strengthening their programming, allows insights to be made regarding prospective teacher and hiring managers’ decisions, and offers ways to uncover and promote teacher diversity. This brief may be helpful to policymakers and legislators seeking to better serve teachers and students by ensuring all new teachers are diverse and well prepared from the first day they lead a classroom.
