Preparing Pre-K Teachers: Policy Considerations and Strategies
This article from the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) highlights four approaches states should consider taking to expand and strengthen the PreK certification pipeline. These approaches include allowing community colleges to confer bachelor’s degrees, supporting paid work-based training through registered apprenticeships, funding Grow Your Own programs that remove barriers for teachers within communities, and encouraging institutions of higher education (IHEs) to collaborate on developing aligned pathways. The report describes the ways these approaches address existing barriers to certification for PreK teachers, particularly teachers of color, targeting state policymakers and administrators at IHEs. The opportunities and areas of focus included in the report are particularly useful for state policymakers considering how to improve their PreK teacher workforce following the return of children and families to early childhood education in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
