September 2022 | The Wallace Foundation

This report from The Wallace Foundation highlights nine practical tips to help schools and out-of-school-time (OST) programs boost social and emotional learning (SEL) in children. The key tips are the following: commit to SEL, create SEL committees to guide implementation, build trust between school and OST partners, make SEL a priority for a full day, help adults build their skills first, provide clear guidance on SEL practices, start with short daily SEL rituals, spread responsibility for SEL across staff, and apply SEL practices to weather unpredictable challenges. These insights are products from the case studies of six communities participating in The Wallace Foundation Partnerships for Social and Emotional Learning Initiative. This resource could help leadership preparation faculty support aspiring principals in learning to plan collaboratively with community partners.
