This research brief from the Learning Policy Institute analyzes the outcomes from New Mexico’s investment in community schools and highlights the state’s classification of community schools as collaborative hubs integrating resources and supports to address students’ holistic needs. After reviewing case studies from three sites that received state implementation grants, the brief demonstrates positive outcomes such as improved test scores, increased graduation rates, reduced absenteeism, increased student engagement and connectedness, and stronger family involvement—all resulting from implementation of key practices. These practices include collaborative leadership, shared power, and voice; powerful student and family engagement; rigorous, community-connected classroom instruction; expanded, culturally enriched learning opportunities; a culture of belonging, safety, and care; and integrated systems of support. The brief underscores the importance of sustained, adequate funding to ensure these practices can be effectively scaled and maintained.
