Liberatory Design: Mindsets and Modes to Design for Equity
This framework by Liberatory Design defines what liberatory design is and offers ways for educators and practitioners to support it through mindsets and modes. Liberatory designs offer practitioners a way to liberate educational designers from habits that perpetuate inequalities, shift power in relationships (e.g., teacher–student, district–teacher), foster learning and agency for all involved, and create conditions for collective liberation. The mindsets, stances, and values that are critical to implementing liberatory design are accompanied by explanations of their importance and facilitation options. Similarly, the modes of liberatory design provide questions to guide reflection throughout the process. Overall, this resource offers a guiding framework that could liberate the practices of teachers, instructional staff, principals, superintendents, and others who hold power in educational spaces.
