This 60-minute webinar from the 21 CSLA at the University of California, Berkeley explores how research on the CalHOPE initiative is reshaping social emotional learning (SEL). They both endorse a shift from traditional SEL to a more community-driven approach that promotes equity and drives social change. By fostering trusting relationships, centering student voices, leveraging community partnerships, and engaging in ongoing learning and self-reflection, school leaders can create supportive environments where students—regardless of their backgrounds—can thrive. Panelists give examples of how they enact transformative SEL, including webinars, learning about students and families’ experiences and needs, exploring community cultural wealth, prioritizing authentic joy and laughter in classrooms, and modeling humility and accountability. Afterward, community partnerships—such as those with mental health practitioners and behavior engagement teams—can be established. This resource could be helpful to teachers, school leaders, and district administrators seeking to implement equitable and community-driven SEL practices to support student well-being and drive systemic change.
