October 2021 | American Institutes for Research

This research brief from the American Institutes for Research presents principals’ perspectives on the changes that their schools experienced and the innovations they led during 2020–21. The authors noted that the 188 principal participants had different experiences, but they described their perspectives on school life in three words: pivot, resilience, and grace. School leaders discussed scaling technology to deliver and manage instruction and shared how doing so brought about new challenges. Principals revealed that using new staffing practices met the needs of educators and students and discussed how re-engineering student flow supported new learning. This brief also shares participants’ efforts in creating new partnerships with community and government agencies in order to better serve their communities.
