October 2022 | New America

This brief from New America highlights the Kennedy Children’s Center (KCC) Grow Your Own (GYO) Program, which develops its own teacher assistants to combat staff attrition and nonspecific training. The brief describes the development of the GYO training program at KCC, highlighting key features and ongoing improvements to explore how it is expanding to help staff members achieve their long-term career goals. The brief also discusses lingering challenges impacting the sustainability and reach of the program. Located in East Harlem, the Kennedy Children’s Center serves children 3 to 5 years old with developmental disabilities; its GYO program assists community members in becoming certified teacher assistants well suited to work with that population. Highlighting best practices and challenges associated with the development and expansion of the GYO program, this resource is well suited for educator preparation program leaders and local education agency administrators considering shifting to a similar model.
