Identifying Barriers to Recruiting and Retaining a Diverse Teacher Workforce
This brief from the Hunt Institute identifies, analyzes, and offers recommendations for addressing barriers that may contribute to the mismatch between the number of teachers of color and the number of diverse public school students. While teacher diversity has been linked to improved K–12 outcomes for all students, with particular benefits for students of color, teaching populations remain disproportionately white in comparison to public school student populations. The barriers highlighted include disproportionately low rates of Black and Hispanic candidates in college and traditional teacher preparation programs, the burden of student loan debt, challenges associated with teacher licensure, and working conditions that nonwhite teachers encounter. Focusing on preparation, debt accumulation, completion, and retention, the brief draws attention to these barriers and offers recommendations to policymakers to assist in creating and sustaining a robust and diverse teacher workforce that reflects the diversity of its student population.
