Grow Your Own Educators: Opportunities and Challenges for Strengthening Teacher Preparation Video

November 2022 | New America

This 90-minute webinar from New America includes a discussion from a panel of experts on the challenges and opportunities associated with Grow Your Own (GYO) Educator programs. The webinar included two panels, one on the “what” of GYO and one on the “how” of GYO, and a question-and-answer segment. Key topics include the potential for GYO programs to serve the entire teacher recruitment pathway, including recruitment, preparation, placement, and wraparound support for novice teachers; the importance of creating a justice-centered orientation; the importance of building cross-organization relationships; and the difficulty of effectively funding programs. Representatives from a variety of GYO programs offer insight into ways programs can tap into their communities; address barriers to teaching, particularly for teachers of color; and create more culturally competent pathways into the teaching field. The webinar is well suited for GYO program administrators and state and district officials considering supporting integrated GYO programs.
