Sarah Strong and Mari Jones
August 2023 | High Tech High Graduate School of Education

This syllabus from High Tech High Graduate School of Education (HTH GSE) for course EDU 555: Foundations of Student-Centered Pedagogy is designed to support teacher candidates in developing the foundations of effective instructional practice by (1) exploring the processes by which students construct meaning and develop understandings of themselves and their world, and (2) learning how to plan, facilitate, and reflect on “thinking routines,” which engage all students in developing conceptual understandings. The course combines theory and practice, enabling candidates to develop novice-level proficiency in the California Teaching Performance Expectations. “Put It to Practice” assignments throughout the course allow candidates to connect coursework to fieldwork experiences as program faculty and fieldwork supervisors provide regular feedback. With an emphasis placed on personalization; authentic assessment; and learning that is differentiated by a classroom’s cultural and linguistic diversity and neurodiversity, the syllabus reflects HTH’s commitment to deeper learning.
