Developing Middle School Students’ AI Literacy
This conference paper presented at the 52nd ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education details a workshop designed to prepare middle school students—particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds—to develop AI literacy. After an online implementation of the workshop during COVID-19, the report found significant increases in students’ conceptual understanding of AI, knowledge of potential bias in AI, and ability to adapt to AI-empowered jobs. The students were also highly engaged with the topic of ethics and the major role that bias can play in AI. Further discussions students had regarding AI—particularly with their families—indicated that this workshop sparked higher interest in this science, given that the existing literature suggests that such conversations are not typical occurrences outside of the classroom. This resource could be valuable to teacher preparation faculty looking for research-based approaches to developing AI curricula and instructional practices.
