Equipping Educators for Redesigned Schools: Scaling Effective Preparation Models in a Post-ESSER World
With the end of ESSER and COVID-19 relief funding, there is an urgent need for long-term solutions to sustain and expand efforts to address educator shortages and improve workforce readiness. Those efforts proved to be successful in preparing new teachers and school leaders to develop schools and classrooms that foster powerful learning and enable thriving for each and every student.
Even as funds run out, educators able to provide safe and welcoming learning environments are more critical than ever in this post-pandemic era where students face unprecedented stressors and may grapple with anxiety and other mental health challenges. At the same time, nearly every state is facing teacher shortages. School-based preparation models, based on partnerships between school districts and teacher preparation programs and with extended opportunities to learn and practice in classrooms, offer a promising solution, but they remain the exception rather than the norm—hindered by policies that fail to support their expansion.
EdPrepLab’s Fifth Annual Policy Summit brought together experts to explore how we can scale these innovative partnerships and align systems to meet 21st-century needs.
