Working Respectfully With Indigenous Communities Around Data and Evidence: A Resource for State Education Agencies
In the policy report from the Regional Education Laboratory at WestEd, resources for state education agency (SEA) staff are provided to build partnerships with tribal leaders to improve educational outcomes for students who are Native American through the use of data, research, and evidence. The report includes six principles for working with indigenous communities and provides examples of what it looks like to uphold these principles in practice. Native students disproportionately experience high rates of special education identification, suspension, and chronic absenteeism due to structural inequalities. Through partnering more effectively with tribal governments, SEAs have the opportunity to help benefit academic and social emotional outcomes for students who are Native American.
