This web page shares research findings on teacher retention from a new survey of more than 4,600 current teachers in California. As the data indicated, educators enter the profession to help students and make a difference. However, many teachers are feeling high levels of stress, exhaustion, burnout, and job dissatisfaction. Many are considering leaving the profession. The findings show the significant challenges to teacher retention and recruitment and also to the preparation of aspiring teachers, especially teachers of color. Teachers indicated that real-life teaching experience was important in preparation to teach and that workload and financial costs are factors in deciding to enter a preparation program.
