Trauma-Informed Strategies for Building Relationships with Students

This 7-minute video provides excerpts from Dr. Sam Himelstein’s keynote presentation at a Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) event. Himelstein, a researcher, psychotherapist, and youth advocate, offers four research-based relationship skills that can be intentionally practiced and developed as a foundation to trauma care and healing for students. These strategies are identified as attunement, authenticity, deep listening, and skillful self-disclosure. To support professional learning, this resource also includes a two‐page guide that covers the content and a set of three reflection questions.
