Trauma-Informed Approaches: A Central California Convening Keynote Presentation Highlights
This 10-minute video provides excerpts from Martha Merchant’s keynote address at an event hosted by Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) and the California School Based Health Alliance. This event was created to build awareness of the impacts of trauma on students and to offer trauma-informed approaches to creating school environments that are safe and supportive. Merchant, a clinical psychologist at Healthy Environments and Response to Trauma in Schools (HEARTS) Program at the University of California, San Francisco, identifies ways for adults to recognize triggers and reduce stress in the classroom as well as ways to prevent escalation. As trauma affects learning, behavior, and health, the speaker affirms why it is necessary for adults to understand trauma-informed approaches.
