Teaching Literacy in Tennessee
This curriculum guide from the Tennessee Department of Education outlines high-impact teaching practices that can help educators develop students’ literacy proficiency. It outlines Tennessee’s goal to cultivate proficient readers, writers, and thinkers. It also considers the following five ideas taken from the existing literature: that students need (1) the opportunity to engage with a large amount of texts, (2) the opportunity to read complex texts, (3) to think deeply about and respond to text through reading and writing, (4) to develop writing skills in connection to what they are reading, and (5) to practice foundational literacy skills that have been explicitly taught through reading and writing. The guide emphasizes the importance of intentional planning, research-based instruction, and reflective practices. Overall, the resource is valuable to leaders, teachers, and preparation faculty looking to improve literacy instruction in the classroom.
