Teacher Prep Review Standard: Building Content Knowledge
This tool from the National Council on Teacher Quality explores the extent to which undergraduate elementary teacher preparation programs build candidates’ base content knowledge in science and social studies. Building on the knowledge that creating well-prepared teachers requires teacher preparation programs to establish a base of knowledge in the core subjects taught in elementary grades, specifically science and social students, the report provides findings generated from the “Building Content Knowledge: Content Coverage Tool.” This tool provides teacher preparation programs with (1) a personalized analysis of whether the program’s requirements adequately cover key content essential for students, and (2) guidance on which courses the program could require or recommend to best prepare future teachers to pass content licensure exams, teach the breadth of elementary curricula, and boost students’ reading comprehension. The report found that while many programs offer courses on essential science and social studies content, there remains an opportunity to refine course requirements to ensure that teacher candidates receive the necessary content knowledge.
