This video and tool from Edutopia demonstrates for math teachers how to use the Math Interview Protocol to develop students’ thinking and conversation around solving math problems. The 4-minute video shows a middle school teacher using the Math Interview Protocol in his classroom. First, students work independently to complete a given math problem. Then, students work with a partner to do the Math Interview. During the interview, each student explains the feelings, thoughts, and rationale they had while working on their math problem. Once the interview is finished, students that need assistance can ask their peers or teachers to guide them through the problem by using probing questions.
