State Partnerships With University Principal Preparation Programs
This report from the RAND Corporation summarizes lessons from their 5-year study of the Wallace Foundation's University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI), which found that, through collaboration with school districts and state organizations, universities can overcome institutional resistance to change and create meaningful principal preparation program redesign. The authors assert that state policymakers are positioned to improve school leadership through evidence-based policies, and the report suggests using clearly adopted standards to promote coherent state policy in preparation program accreditation and principal licensure. The report builds on findings from an earlier RAND study published in 2020, Using State-Level Policy Levers to Promote Principal Quality, which investigated the actions of state partners to improve school leadership.
