This report from the Learning Policy Institute affirms that effective educational leaders are crucial for student and teacher success, and high-quality professional learning enhances their effectiveness. However, access to such learning varies, particularly disadvantaging leaders in high-poverty schools. States can promote equitable access by investing in ongoing initiatives like leadership academies, building infrastructure for long-term capacity, and providing a continuum of support. This study examined state-supported leadership development initiatives, identifying 26 states with programs aimed at enhancing in-service leaders’ skills. These initiatives offer role-specific learning, career advancement, induction support, leadership team assistance, school improvement aid, and supervisor training. The report highlights various state examples and funding sources, illustrating diverse approaches to leadership development and offering insights for states looking to enhance or establish their own initiatives.
