Roadmap to Educating for American Democracy

March 2021 | Educating for American Democracy

This report from the Educating for American Democracy Initiative outlines goals for a modern history and civic education model in support of civic strength, offering guidelines and resources education leaders can utilize to assess and improve the state of their history and civic curriculum, including skills related to productive civil disagreement. High-quality equitable civic and history education equips members of a democratic society to understand, appreciate, nurture, and improve their political system and civil society. The report and its associated curricular resources build on the importance of inquiry, an appreciation for student diversity and capacity for learning, the development of a self-reflection and growth mindset in teachers, and the cultivation of a learning environment through collaboration with students, administrators, and families. With a goal to provide widespread access to high-quality civic learning to 60 million students, 100,000 schools, and 1 million teachers, this resource is well suited for teachers, education policymakers, teacher preparation program administrators, and those interested in expanding access to civic and history education in the U.S.
