In this research article, the authors document their design and redesign of a lesson on coaching for equity within a required course for pre-service school leaders (PSLs). The authors use a lesson study approach to explore how leadership programs can prepare future administrators for equity-oriented leadership and how collaborative inquiry can inform preparation efforts. The study used data from three cohorts of PSLs and identified the importance of equipping PSLs with the tools and skills to take responsibility for and respond to inequitable practices. The authors describe the lesson and the ways in which the lesson was revised in order to be increasingly concrete and relevant.
