Pursuing Equity at the Intersection of Language, Culture, and Disability: Data Literacy Video

July 2022 | National Center for Systemic Improvement at WestEd

This 90-minute webinar from the National Center for Systemic Improvement at WestEd focuses on how educators, specialists, and families can work together to use meaningful, authentic assessments to determine the needs of English learners (ELs). Speakers encourage expanding data sources to better support instruction for ELs, reduce achievement gaps, and determine eligibility for special education services. Addressing how biases can affect data collection and interpretation and how this has resulted in a disproportionate number of ELs being referred for special education services, the speakers recommend ways to address the challenges of traditional diagnostic practices to ensure culturally responsive approaches to data collection and analysis.
