This report from the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) discusses the value of preparing principals through the field-based training of internships. Because a lack of adequate preparation is one reason why principals leave the profession, this report notes the markers of quality internships and highlights four states (California, Illinois, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania) that are leading the way in principal internship experiences. The author suggests ways that state leaders can use policy to strengthen preparation programs and notes that state boards of education play a role in shaping effective principal preparation.
