Paraeducators’ Journey to Teacher Licensure: Critical Supports and Challenges
This journal article from The Teacher Educator highlights how paraeducators are a potential solution to issues pertaining to teacher shortages, attrition, and diversity. Paraeducators are highly valuable to school systems due to their familiarity with classroom dynamics and work experience in high-need areas, particularly bilingual and special education. Many of them also share linguistic and cultural similarities with their students. The journal article conducts a case study about three subjects who pursued a transition from paraeducator to licensed teacher. The authors make several recommendations to help support paraeducators looking into similar paths. First, a strong partnership between teacher preparation programs and district partners is essential to a program’s efficacy. Second, officials must pay attention to the financial challenges of their paraeducators, supporting opportunities where they can potentially pursue financing to pursue teaching opportunities. Lastly, these programs must make an effort to support paraeducators who are first-generation, nontraditional, or culturally underrepresented. This resource is valuable to stakeholders looking to support paraeducators in acquiring teaching licenses.
