The Natural Environment and Well-Being Syllabus

Laura van Zandt Allen and Courtney Crim
August 2022 | Trinity University

This syllabus from Trinity University details a 3-credit course (EDU 3310/ENV 3310) focusing on the relationship between nature and human well-being. The course introduces students to the benefits of natural environments on human health and well-being. Topics of study include the historical and cultural traditions of humans’ connections to nature, theoretical frameworks and mechanisms of human–nature connections, and implementation of interdisciplinary research agendas, as well as implications for education, diversity, health policy, and urban planning. A significant portion of the course takes place in the field, where students will explore local and regional parks, nature-based educational settings, and the practice of forest therapy. While most fieldwork will take place during the 3-hour course time frame, there is a required full-day field trip, plus additional local fieldwork completed in small groups outside of class time.
