The Louisiana Believe and Prepare Educator Preparation Reform

December 2022 | Institute of Education Sciences and REL Southwest

This report and summary one-pager from the Institute of Education Sciences and REL Southwest, presents findings from the pilot and early implementation years of the Louisiana Believe and Prepare Educator Preparation Reform. The reform was piloted in 2014-15 and became mandatory in 2018 for all traditionally prepared teacher candidates in Louisiana. The reform focused on competency-based curricula, extended clinical experiences, and mentor teacher training. Central to the reform was a required year-long residency with a mentor teacher that replaced a 6-week clinical experience. This study showed that teacher candidates who completed the Believe and Prepare program were 2 percentage points higher in their likelihood to stay in Louisiana for at least a year, and they were 7 percentage points higher in their likelihood to stay in the same school for 3 years.
