Leveraging the Crisis for Equity and Access in the Long Term: A Brief Research Report
April 2021 | Frontiers in Education
This research brief reports an analysis of how nine principals advanced equity during the COVID-19 crisis. Through interviews with school principals in California, Connecticut, and New York, the authors found that these leaders confronted deficit mindsets among staff and became advocates for extra community resources such as food and health care. Access to technology was not viewed by participants as one of the biggest challenges schools faced; instead, issues of systemic racism and classism took priority among the principals interviewed. The brief concludes with a recommendation for principal preparation programs to include case studies or modules on crisis training.
