Inviting Participation With Thumbs-Up Responses

January 2019 | Edutopia

Students have different processing times. In many cases, the “fast thinkers” raise their hands first and are typically called on the most. This Edutopia video highlights a quick assessment strategy, thumbs-up, that can encourage more students to contribute and engage by accommodating these different processing needs. With this strategy, all students have the opportunity to think through teachers’ questions and participate in each class. The video demonstrates the strategy in action in a public middle school classroom in Portland, Maine.
