The Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) of the Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) seeks to prepare and support teacher leaders in creating equitable and successful schools and classrooms. This document is the syllabus for their course entitled EDUC267G: Integrating the Garden into the Elementary Curriculum. The course is designed to provide teacher candidates with real-world contexts in which to explore some of the key issues that children face in health, nutrition, and sustainability. The syllabus includes a variety of suggested readings and resources. Teacher candidates attend three garden sessions and complete a lesson plan or unit utilizing knowledge gained from these sessions, which they may then teach during their independent student teaching week. Course topics covered include self-sufficiency skills, health, nutrition, American Indian history and culture, integrating content standards with real-life contexts, and more.
