This publication and interactive tool from the Center for Public Integrity explores how students experiencing homelessness are undercounted and underserved, and details the financial costs associated with supporting them. Many districts are likely undercounting the number of students experiencing homelessness, which means these students are not receiving the essential services they are guaranteed under federal law. The research provides reasons why homelessness can be hidden and why tracking students experiencing homelessness is difficult. The report includes an interactive map of student homelessness rates by state and provides recent data on student race and disability.
