Grow Your Own Teacher Programs: What Are They, and What Can (and Can’t) They Accomplish?
This brief from the Brookings Institute provides key findings from a recent study on Grow Your Own (GYO) programs, providing insight into how they are defined, the prevalence of GYO initiatives with promising features, and their potential to increase teacher supply, improve teacher shortages, and diversify the workforce. The report identifies several characteristics that, when present in GYO programs, may produce better outcomes, particularly for teacher candidates of color. These include offering certifications in shortage subjects, intentional recruitment efforts for diverse candidates, and residency models. While GYO programs have potential, their impacts on teacher supply and diversification may be small and slow to materialize in the face of steep barriers.
