Grow Your Own Programs: Examining Potential and Pitfalls for a New Generation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Community Teachers
This policy brief from the National Education Policy Center housed at the University of Colorado Boulder School of Education describes how the Grow Your Own (GYO) program model can be used to advance equity and justice in teacher development and leveraged to open doors to the profession for the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community. While GYO programs have potential, the author also notes that because these programs may fail to consider how BIPOC teachers evolve as they progress along the teacher development continuum, policy must support the retention of these new teachers. The author recommends that GYO programs take three steps: (1) articulate and operationalize explicit justice and equity commitments related to BIPOC teacher development; (2) cultivate meaningful community networks and invest in community power and cultural wealth; and (3) be driven by research that amplifies, honors, and applies lessons from BIPOC educators.
