Four Research-Informed Approaches to Boosting Teacher Morale and Motivation

This article by Kevin Perks of WestEd shares ways for school leaders to increase the motivation of their faculty and staff. Perks discusses what is known about motivation and points out that leaders need to tap into existing motivation in order to keep energy flowing. The author describes four main practices that leaders can use and offers ways to implement each of them. These strategies for harnessing existing motivation are: (1) promote teacher voice and decision-making, (2) make tasks meaningful by connecting them to teaching and learning, (3) support success on challenging tasks, and (4) provide opportunities for meaningful collaboration.
