September 2022 | National Association of State Boards of Education

This brief from the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) describes five trends shaping the teacher workforce, including (1) dramatic growth in size, (2) a shift toward a younger, more experienced workforce, (3) an increasing proportion of female teachers, (4) a growing number of teachers of color, and (5) decreasing stability as teacher turnover rates rise. Using data from the U.S. Department of Education’s nationally representative Schools and Staffing Survey and the National Teacher Principal Survey, the brief provides insight into these key developments, the reasons why they are occurring, and their implications for education reform and policy.
