Family Diversity 3rd Grade Lesson Plan

September 2021 | A Queer Endeavor

This lesson plan designed by teachers working with A Queer Endeavor introduces 3rd-graders to family diversity. The lesson invites students to participate in a range of speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities focused on differences in family structures locally and globally. Students consider who is a part of their own families and communities and get to know more about each other along the way. The lesson plan includes individual activities, think-pair-share, and a read-aloud of the book All Families Are Different by Sol Gordon. The resource includes reflections from a teacher who implemented the lesson in the classroom.
