Equity as a Centerpiece in Education
This field guide from the California Association of African-American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA) offers insight into existing inequalities in American education systems and the potentialities of an equity initiative aimed at African American educators. The field guide includes a series of professional learning objectives, designed to help educators understand educational inequities and their ongoing impact on students of color, the role internal and external members of the school community can play in eliminating some of the historical barriers to quality education for students of color, and be able to lead in conversations on the lingering effects of inequality. Components include excerpts from interviews with students, parents, and administrators; lessons learned from past attempts to promote equality in education; opportunities for reflection; and survey tools. The guide will be particularly useful for educator preparation program administrators considering issues of equity, particularly for African American teachers and students.
